Kratom? What is it and where is it from?

Updated: May 11, 2023

Kratom, also known as Mitragyna speciosa, is a tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. The leaves of this tree have been used for centuries by the locals in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia for various purposes, such as traditional medicine and cultural ceremonies.

Kratom has a long and rich history in Southeast Asia. Its use can be traced back as far as the 19th century, when it was primarily used by manual laborers and farmers who found it beneficial for boosting their energy and relieving fatigue. The locals would chew the leaves or brew them into tea to reap the benefits of the herb.

Over time, kratom gained popularity outside of Southeast Asia, and its use expanded to other parts of the world. It was used as a natural remedy for aches, pains, and even to help with coughs and diarrhea. Some people also found it helpful in managing stress and anxiety.

Despite its long history of use, kratom has also faced controversy and legal issues. Some countries have banned or regulated the use of kratom due to concerns about its potential risks and side effects. However, ongoing research continues to shed light on the benefits and risks of kratom, and discussions about its regulation and use continue to evolve.

Overall, the history of kratom is a fascinating and complex one. While it has been used for centuries in Southeast Asia for medicinal purposes, it's important to do your research and talk to your doctor to make an informed decision about whether it's right for you.
